Wuthering Waves Tier List - Every Character Ranked - Wuthering Waves Guide - IGN (2024)

Welcome to the Wuthering Waves tier list! This is a ranking of all characters in terms of how efficiently they can accomplish the goals of their kits in endgame content, particularly the most difficult content in the game. For the purposes of this guide, 5-star characters do not consider Resonance Sequences while 4-star characters do consider Sequences.

Please keep in mind that Wuthering Waves is still a new game! There's plenty to explore and learn in this game, and it currently isn't possible to level characters all the way. Considering this tier list is updated for 1.0, it's very likely placements will change, so check back from time to time.

Wuthering Waves Tier List Ranking System

Before we enter the tier list, it's important to understand what the basis for each ranking is.

RankingDescription
SSSBroken, busted, unbalanced; whatever term you want to use, any account is worse when it doesn't have this character.
SAcquiring this character alone is a major upgrade to your account can help you shred through the game's hardest content, regardless of what kind of account you have. S-Tier characters are the cream of the crop.
AThis character is an excellent choice for whatever purpose they fill. They are either among the best at what they do or the only character that fulfils a much-appreciated role.
BFor some reason or another, the character is often suboptimal for their role. They are good, but not great. However, they are still solid competitive choices for enthusiasts of the character.
CThe character is "just okay." Their uses are usually pretty specific and are suboptimal in more cases than not. The efficiency of the kit doesn't warrant excessive enthusiasm, but there are valid use cases when thinking competitively.
DThere exists some important flaw in the kit design that makes the character difficult to successfully complete endgame content. The character needs heavy, disproportionate investment and/or skill compared to other characters in order to achieve similar results.

Wuthering Waves Tier List: Best Characters

With that out of the way, let's get on with the rankings! Characters are only rated vertically; horizontal placement on a tier list is not considered. Luckily, many of the characters at launch are strong, but over time, many may drop in ranking as new characters roll out.

A good rule of thumb is that support units usually have the most long-term value, followed by hybrid units (since they support while contributing to DPS through their own damage), and ending with on-field DPS units getting the least staying power due to inevitable powercreep. The more a character supports, the more diverse teams they can perform in.

Wuthering Waves Tier List Explanations

Here, we'll cover the justifications for why each character stands where they do, and what distinguishes the best Wuthering Waves characters.

CharacterRankingExplanation
VerinaSSSThe best healer and buffer in the game, full stop. She is easy to play, accessible through the 5-star selector when starting the game, buffs the entire team for long durations, and fits into pretty much any team.
JiyanSCrowd control via enemy-grouping and strong AoE damage wrapped in a single package. He has the stats to make short work of large groups of enemies effortlessly.

Long-term, however, his viability may fade as more DPS characters enter the game.

YinlinSAn off-field AoE DPS and buffer that can also be played as an on-field DPS. Her niche as a specialized Electro + Resonance Liberation buffer is exceptional, granting 20+% damage to two different states just from swapping her out.

Nearly every on-field Electro DPS that comes out will want her as a teammate.

SanhuaAAn excellent support and alternatively, viable on-field DPS who can run through each part of her kit and swap off quickly, buffing Basic Attacks for her teammate.

While her altered Heavy Attack requires practice, it is satisfying to pull off and her niche in Basic Attack buffing gives her longevity for most accounts.

The flexibility in her viable roles and extremely short field time requirement also contribute to a high position on this list.

CalcharoAA potent on-field DPS that already has an exceptional off-field DPS + support in Yinlin. Currently, he is a part of one of the strongest teams in 1.0 (Calcharo, Yinlin, Verina).

On-field DPS's, however, are more likely to be powercrept over time, and does not have the same utilities that a character like Jiyan can give himself (in Jiyan's case, grouping).

Additionally, he can be difficult to play optimally, since getting three death messengers in a single rotation is challenging, especially with enemies as mobile as they are in this game.

MortefiAMuch of what can be said about Sanhua is true for Mortefi.

He can run through his kit and use his Outro pretty swiftly and consistently, is a good source of damage through his off-field synchronized attacks, and is a niche buffer of Heavy Attacks, especially useful with powerful characters like Jiyan.

BaizhiALikely to fall in rankings over time as more healers are added to the roster. She is free as a rigged first pull for every account and is one of the only accessible healers.

Her ATK buff is also valuable to teammates.

JianxinAWhile she can play as a weaker DPS, her shielding, enemy grouping, and Liberation Deepen (on her Outro) make her a solid support for a diverse set of needs.

Additionally, she does not need much investment in order to make good use of her, which is always a bonus. Grouping is exceptionally valuable at this stage in the game, and the difference between her grouping and Yangyang's is night and day.

Rover (Havoc)APerhaps the strongest main character kit in any gacha game, as gacha game main characters tend to be extremely weak to incentivize acquiring more characters.

Even if this version of the main character is powercrept, the fact that they are free on every single account and are easy to level up and ascend makes Rover an excellent long-term investment.

Their specialized echo, Dreamless, helps make them one of the better offensive forces in 1.0.

EncoreAA nuclear-powered on-field DPS that wins fights with sheer force. Her long animations can be swap-cancelled, nullifying one of her major weaknesses.
DanjinAEligible for S tier in the hands of a seasoned player. The only reason for Danjin's rank of A is the steep difficulty curve to deal the maximum possible damage while also keeping her from dying.

Especially with her Sequences, she can match and outperform 5-star units. If she wanes in power over time, she still can grant Havoc deepen to a stronger Havoc DPS, and she plays a solid role in double Dreamless teams with Havoc Rover.

YangyangBA free character from the beginning and the face of Wuthering Waves' launch. She supports her team with some adequate damage, enemy grouping, and energy generation for her next teammate via her Outro; the latter of which is currently unique to her.
LingyangBAn awkward 5-star DPS due to his lack of poise damage/stagger and somewhat contrived playstyle, making him easy to interrupt.

He needs specialized supports to maximize his efficiency, like enemy grouping and Glacio damage buffs. Having both of these, plus a healer, is challenging, making him hard to please compared to other 5-stars.

AaltoCOur main Aero buffer, attached to his Outro. While his Skill has some taunt effects, maximizing his damage and working through his kit is difficult due to the positioning required; he has to set a screen up that buffs shots fired through it. Bosses move around very frequently, and usually demand chasing them around the arena.

He's also not the best buffer for our current Aero DPS, Jiyan, beaten out by another 4-star in Mortefi. As soon as another Aero support with a comparable buff is released, Aalto will probably get pushed out of teams.

ChixiaCThis free character has a powerful Resonance Liberation with high multipliers, but the energy requirements are so crazy high that you won't be able to consistently use it, which significantly lowers overall DPS.

It's possible Chixia will get much better as more ways to handle her energy requirements are released in the form of new teammates. Right now, though, she needs too much investment to compare with other DPS characters.

Rover (Spectro)CIt's hard to justify using Spectro Rover when Havoc Rover exists. Spectro Rover does offer some utility and even some minor healing. Sequences are free, and they'll pass as a support for skilled players who don't need much to accomplish their goal.
YuanwuDA DEF scaling unit with coordinated attacks and little utility outside of that, while the damage is also not quite there.

In a game like Genshin Impact, low-damage consistent damage from an outside source is great for making elemental reactions, but that mechanic doesn't exist in Wuthering Waves. Off-field damage, then, needs to either be strong or offer some kind of utility, and Yuanwu doesn't really offer either.

He can take down enemy "shields" (that stun the monster when taken down) much faster than other characters, but at least in the current state of the game, it's just not enough to warrant investment unless you love the character. This is especially relevant because taking down boss shields doesn't actually make attacks deal more damage; it only makes them sit still for a short period. Not only this, but he takes lots of field time to execute his gameplan.

TaoqiDA support with a buff that no current characters take advantage of (Skill Deepen), who has long field time (bad for a support), and her buff only helps the next character.

Usually, a character who offers healing or defensive utility has a buff that affects the entire party, since you will usually move from dedicated support, to hybrid DPS, to on-field DPS. This way the main DPS takes the buffs from two characters.
