TVS-471: Installing the QM2-2P10G1T with M2 NVMe SSD Problem

Postby bernisv »

Hello,

i have puchased the QM2-2P10G1T expansion card, which gives me 10GB ethernet and 2 x NVMe SSD-Slots.
So i have installed a Samsung 950 Pro M2 NVMe SSD and i have installed the expansion Card in the black slot (i think Gen3 x8 slot).
The white slot is a Gen 2 x 4 slot and the expansion card is also Gen2 x 4. But its better to put it in the black slot, because of the power cables, which are horrible to store, when the card is in the white slot.

Now the problem: The NAS is booting endless long (at least 10 Minutes - normale boot time is maybe 2 minutes) and after that, there is no recognition of the SSD, or the 10GB Adapter!

So: Is the black slot maybe the problem? I thought, it was down compatible to Gen 2x4 to put the card in, or not? Shall i try the white slot? But with it, it is difficult to store the power cables of the NAS.
Or it can be a different problem?

Greetings Berni

Try it. You have nothing to lose.

Use the forum search feature before posting.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

Hello all,

i placed the card in the white PCIe Gen2 x4 slot and it works.
So, normally should the black Gen3 x8 slot be also compatible, but it is not.....

Not really optimal, but it works now without problems.

Could it be because of the BIOS Version?
QW56IR14 is needed
maybe then it's working also in the black Gen3 x8 slot?

I'm also interested to install one of the QM2-2P-xxx cards but i wonder why TVS-x71 do not support QM2-2P-344 or QM2-2P-384 although there is one Gen3 x8 slot available.

Another question is about the options i have with the two NVMe SSDs:
I read about SSD-Cache or QTier-Volume

but is it possible to make an exclusive Volume only with the two SSDs and furthermore could I configure the two SSDs in a RAID 1?

Anyone with experience about that?
Cheers, Chris

Yes and yes.

I've asked QNAP support, and got a reply..
TVS-471 can only support QM2-2P-244A(Dual M.2 22110/2280 PCIe NVMe SSD expansion card), but not QM2-2P-384. We may have compatibility updates with the upcoming QTS 4.4.1 official release, maybe you will consider to wait till April(or May, no confirmed date yet). Thank you very much.

but not sure if TVS-471 will be upgradable to 4.4.1 as currently I cannot load 4.4.0 there anyway.

So lets wait if there will be any improvements, or we need to upgrade the HW to have full support.
