How Tall Is Batman? [Movies & Comics] (2024)

Batman is by far the most iconic superhero that isn’t superhuman. He’s just a regular guy, albeit filthy rich, extremely intelligent, well-trained, and in peak physical shape. There are so many character versions in movies, TV shows, animated series, and comics. So, how tall is Batman?

Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, is 6’2’’ (188 cm) in the comics and the animated series. However, his height varied throughout the movies, depending on which actor portrayed the role. Batman’s height on-screen varied from 5’9’’ (175 cm) to 6’4’’ (193 cm).

Keep reading this article if you want to know more about Batman’s height and how he compares to other superheroes from the DC Universe.

How Tall Is Batman in Comics?

The first time Batman appeared in the comics was in 1939 in Detective Comics #27. Since then, there have been dozens of different versions, but one thing never changes – Bruce Wayne is always 6’2’’ (188 cm). That makes him two inches higher than Wonder Woman, who’s listed at 6’0’’ (183 cm), and only an inch shorter than Superman. Clark Kent is 6’3’’ (190.5 cm).

I think his height is perfect because it puts him right in the middle of DC’s main superheroes. He’s quite tall compared to the average man, but still not too tall to feel unrealistic. If he were shorter, he might feel too weak to fight against superhumans or by their side.

On the other hand, if he were any higher, he’d just seem unrealistic and clumsy. Most of the things he does – like stealth movement, agility, speed, etc. – aren’t things that a seven-footer (213 cm) could do.

How Tall Is Batman in the Animated Series?

The DC Animated Universe is incredibly large, and it has a couple of versions of Batman. However, there was no reason to change Bruce Wayne’s height in any animated series, which is why he’s 6’2’’ (188 cm), just like in comic books.

The animated version of Batman appeared in numerous DC Animated Universe shows, starting with Batman: The Animated Series in 1992, through Superman: The Animated Series, Gotham Girls, Batman Beyond, all the way through Justice League Unlimited that ended in 2006.

How Tall Are Batman Actors in the Movies?

So far, there have been six different Batman actors in DC movies, with the seventh pending until 2022, when Robert Pattinson will present his take on the character. Interestingly, only one actor was the exact height as Bruce Wayne from the comics, and their heights vary seven full inches (18 cm). I’ll break down each Batman actor’s height chronologically.

Adam West – 6’2’’ (188 cm)

Adam West was the first guy ever to become Bruce Wayne on-screen. He portrayed Batman from 1966 to 1968, and people mainly know him from the silly Batman meme. The costume was so bad it’s hilarious, but Adam West was the only Bruce Wayne who was the same height as the comics’ character.

West is 6’2’’ (188 cm), just like the character from the comics. One might say that he lacked the physique, and his costume was horrible, but he is the first Batman ever, so he deserves some credit and a spot on the list.

Michael Keaton – 5’9’’ (175 cm)

After West, the next Batman was Michael Keaton. It was an odd choice, seeing that Keaton is only 5’9’’ (175 cm) – five inches shorter than the character from the comics. But, hey, Tim Burton directed both movies during Keaton’s run as Batman, and Tim is an odd guy.

Still, I can’t say that Keaton’s Bruce Wayne felt short to me. In fact, the two movies are still my favorite Batman stints, especially the first one where Jack Nicholson killed the part of Batman’s arch-nemesis, the Joker.

Val Kilmer – 6’0’’ (183 cm)

In 1995, only three years after Batman Returns came the movie Batman Forever. A new actor, Val Kilmer, was chosen for the role, and although he was a lot closer to Bruce Wayne’s comic book height, casting him was proven not-that-good a choice. Kilmer stands at 6’0’’ (183 cm), only two inches below the comics Batman’s height.

Still, the movie was quite bad, both among critic reviews and the audience. It has a lot to do with a weak plot, not just a poor performance from Val, but I just have to say that I’m glad he never returned for another run at the part.

George Clooney – 5’11’’ (180.5 cm)

If you needed any proof that it was the plot, not the actor that made Batman Forever stink, just watch Batman & Robin from 1997. George Clooney replaced Val Kilmer under the same director – and the movie stank even worse than Batman Forever. It was atrociously bad, but I have to admit, it’s one of the guilty-pleasure movies I’ve watched and cringed at least ten times.

Clooney is the second-shortest Batman ever, standing at 5’11’’ (180.5 cm). That’s not terribly short for an average guy, but it is for Bruce Wayne. He wasn’t that terrible as Batman – he had the looks and the charms, but everything about the movie was bad – the plot, the dialogues, the antagonist… You know what, I think I need another watch.

Christian Bale – 6’0’’ (183 cm)

Almost ten years had passed before we got another Batman on-screen – and oh, was it worth the wait. Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan teamed up from 2005 to 2012 to make one of the best movie trilogies ever created based on comic books with their Dark Knight series.

The first film from 2005, The Dark Knight, is one of the best-rated movies of all time on IMDb, with a mind-blowing 9.0/10 rating. At 6’0’’ (183 cm), Bale wasn’t as tall as the comic book version of Batman, but he more than made up for it with a spectacular physique – he was and is by far the most chiseled Bruce Wayne ever.

Ben Affleck – 6’4’’ (193 cm)

The last Bruce Wayne we’ve seen in a movie is Ben Affleck. His portrayal of the character polarized the audience. Some say he’s the best Batman ever, while others say he’s the worst. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, but one thing is for certain.

Affleck is the tallest Bruce Wayne ever, standing at 6’4’’ (193 cm). He’s even taller than the original comic version of the character. Although I didn’t particularly like his version of Batman, every movie he starred in as Bruce Wayne was awesome.

Part of it is the upgraded technology, but also the cool storyline that follows the DC Extended Universe (DC’s version of the MCU).

Robert Pattinson – 6’1’’ (185 cm)

Finally, we’re getting a new Batman in theaters very soon – one that looks and feels a lot darker, at least if we’re judging by the trailer. I’m talking about Robert Pattinson’s Batman, coming out in 2022.

The movie was initially scheduled for 2021, but the premiere had been postponed several times due to the pandemic. I can’t wait for it because I believe it will be awesome. People always seem to remember an actor’s worst role, though, so Pattinson might never get over Twilight. Still, if you move your prejudices about him aside, Robert evolved into a fantastic actor.

He’s quite close to Batman height-wise, too, as Pattinson stands at 6’1’’ (185 cm), only an inch below the character’s height in the comics.

Who Is the Shortest Batman?

The shortest Batman ever was Michael Keaton in Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992), both directed by Tim Burton. Keaton is listed at 5’9’’ (175 cm), a full five inches (13 cm) shorter than the character from DC Comics.

Who Is the Tallest Batman?

Ben Affleck is 6’4’’ (193 cm), making him the tallest Batman ever – two inches taller than his comic book counterpart. The difference between him and Michael Keaton (the shortest Batman) is a staggering seven inches (18 cm).
