REPRINTS

The reprints that have been discussed for such a long time are
finally ready.Since the size of the issues vary, the costs for
reproduction and postage varies also.I have tried to keep the
prices as low as possible. Each volume will have the heavy
pewter colored paper that is used for the cover of the present
issues. The addition of 6 pages of heavy cover paper per year
increases the total cost. Each cover costs about 4 times as much
as regular paper and an increase in postage
due to the extra weight. The prices are listed below.

Volume 1, Numbers 1,2,3 & 4$4.0031 pages
Volume 2, Numbers 1,2,3 & 4$5.0054 pages
Volume 3, Numbers 1,2,3 & 4$8.0080 pages
Volume 4, Numbers 1,2,3 & 4$8.0080 pages
Volume 5, Numbers 1,2,3 & 4$8.0084 pages

priced at $4.00 per issue or $15.00 per volume (year).

From the book, HISTORY OF SACRAMENTO COUNTY,
on file at the California State Library, Sacramento,
California.

Herman Huber, deceased. The subject of this sketch was
born in Switzerland in 1835, and came to this country with his
parents in 1844.They were people of means and settled in St.
Louis with their nine children. The father, Henry, first came
out with a colony of Swiss, most of whom settled in St Louis.
Both parents died young, the father at the age of
forty-eight, and the mother still younger.Mr. Herman Huber came
to California in 1851 and went to mining in Hamburg
Ca?on, Placer County, and continued in that business until
1869.He made a good deal of money, but sunk a
considerable part of it in unprofitable ventures. On leaving the
mines he first came to Sacramento, but soon moved to
Colusa, where he went into business as a money banker. In
October, 1867, he was married to Miss Augusta J. Faulkner, a
native of this county, born on Mormon Island, Daughter of Charles
Dix and Elizabeth (Binninger) Faulkner. His father was a native
of Petersburg, Virginia, of Scotch descent; the mother was born
in New York City, December 25, 1826, of
German parentage. They were married in Sacramento
January 15, 1850.On the evening of their wedding they
attended a large ball at Sutter's Fort. They had to go in a
skiff from the Pioneer Hotel, which was kept by Mrs. Huber's
grandfather. This hotel was the first brick house in
Sacramento.During the floods in 1850 they lived for several
days on the table, and had to have the stove up there to do their
cooking. The father, Jacob Binninger, lived to the age of
seventy-four.Mrs. Huber was educated at the Franklin
grammar-school in Sacramento. Her parents came to
California in 1849 and settled in Sacramento. The father
died in March, 1857.The mother survived him twenty-seven years,
and was married to Louis Binninger. They kept the
Pioneer Hotel for many years. She survived her second
husband eight years, dying in 1884, and leaving two
daughters:Maggie, now Mrs. Henry Ward Watkins, of
Oakland, who has a son born in July, 1884, and a daughter
born in February, 1888; the second daughter, Lena M.
Binninger, lives with her half-sister, Mrs Huber. In 1870 Mr.
Huber bought a ranch in Yolo County, about sixteen miles
south of Sacramento, on the river, to which he added by
further purchase until he owned 645 acres in that region. He did
a large dairy business, milking from 140 to 200 cows in two
places not far apart. In 1877 he bought 400 acres on the north
line of Franklin Township, six miles south of
Sacramento, increased by purchase in 1883 to 645 acres,
devoted to general farming, chiefly wheat, barley and alfalfa,
besides some horses for ranch use.Mr Huber was killed by a fall
from his horse within a few miles of his home in
Franklin Township, February 3, 1889, leaving two sons:
Charles Henry Huber, born December 11, 1869, in Todd's
Valley; Herman Louis Huber in Sacramento city, January 30, 1873.
Charles H. was graduated at Sacramento Business
College, and Herman L. is now taking a course in the same
institution.

Mrs. Augusta J. Huber has been for six years a member of
the order of Chosen Friends, Merritt Council, No. 141, which
meets at Clarksburg, in Yolo County.(Editor's Note:After
trying to follow the writer of the previous story, this editor
does not feel quite so badly about his own lack of coherent
writing skills).

Samuel M. Hoover, deceased, was born June 5, 1828, in Blair (then
Bedford) County, Pennsylvania, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth
(Sprecher) Hoover. The former was born January
1, 1793, and the latter October 21, 1798.They were married
February 23, 1819, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, both being
natives of that county. The term of their married life extended
over forty years. They removed from Lancaster
County to Bedford, and afterward to Martinsburg, Blair
County, where the subject of this sketch was born.In 1854 they
sold out and went to Illinois, locating on a farm in
Whiteside County, adjoining the city of Sterling, where they made
their home for the remainder of their lives.Mrs.
Hoover died July 14, 1859, and his wife August 3, 1870.
They were the parents of nine children, viz: Catharine,
George, Sarah, Samuel M., Louisa, John, David, Elizabeth
and Henry.Excepting the eldest daughter, Catharine, all are
living, and, with the exception of John and Louisa, are the heads
of families.Samuel, our subject, was raised on his father's
farm. The country there was new, and the children were brought
up very differently from the children of to day, having to endure
many hardships.Samuel Hoover had to
walk three miles to school in the winters through the snow.In
the summer they could not spare him, but kept him at
home to work on the farm. When a boy, especially on wash
days, he was sent out into the fields to pick up stones and pile
them in a heap, ready to be hauled away. Many times he has
worked at it till his fingers bled.Often his lunch was sent out
to him, in order that he would not bother the folks at the house.
On cold, frosty mornings he was sent bare footed
after the cows. These are only a few of his early experiences.
Poverty was not the cause of this, as his parents were
considered to be rich and were prosperous farmers, but it was the
custom of the country. All the lads of the neighborhood were
brought up in the same way.He was a great help to his father in
many ways when he grew older; he assisted him in building their
house, barns and other buildings. When he
was twenty-one years old he determined to go West.He told his
father, who tried to dissuade him, telling him that if he wished
to marry and settle down he would give him a fine
start; but young Hoover was determined to see more of the
country.Accordingly his father gave him $300 and told him to go
and see for himself, and if he succeeded in finding a better
country than Pennsylvania, the old gentleman might be induced to
see out and emigrate. In 1850 he started for
Burlington, remaining about two weeks, then returned to
Pennsylvania. He traveled all the way back by land. His
route was to Rock Island, then across to Peoria; there took the
stage for Indianapolis, the stage route being over
corduroy roads. The passengers stood it as long as they
could, then got out and walked to Indianapolis. At
Zanesville they bought horses, and Mr Hoover started down
the turnpike on horseback, crossing the Wheeling bridge, and then
on into Pennsylvania, arriving home after the hardest riding he
ever did.The following spring he and his brother George started
back for Iowa and Illinois, buying a couple of fine stallions in
Pennsylvania before starting, taking them to Illinois. On
arriving there, George returned to Pennsylvania, and reported to
his father that it was a pretty good country, which was the cause
of the old gentleman selling out and
moving to Illinois.Samuel and George had arranged to go
to raising horses in Illinois before George returned East,
leaving Samuel there, where he remained till spring, and
during that time made considerable preparations for going
into that business. Then the California gold fever broke out,
and he began making the arrangements necessary for a trip
across the plains. He bought a wagon and four horses, and
secured three passengers who paid him $150 each for their
passage through and board.Early in the spring of 1852 they
started from Council Bluffs, following the main road of travel
via Salt Lake. They took in a few more passengers on the
road, among whom were ex-Lieutenant-Governor Charlie
Fish, and a man named Durgae. The wagon train they joined was
commanded by Captain Conda, who had about forty men
with him and a large band of horses.Mr. Hoover's and
Conda's parties continued together until they neared Salt
Lake, where they separated, Hoover going via Salt Lake, and Conda
going by a northern route; some of Conda's men
joined Hoover. The party stopped in Salt Lake City a week,
takingin supplies. They finally continued their journey, and
arrived in California in August. At Ragtown, Mr. Hoover sold his
horses and wagon, with the exception of the stallion which he had
brought all the way from Pennsylvania, and which was almost too
weak to walk, to an old stage man named 'Bill'
Hamilton, for $700.He received the payment in inch slugs, which
he packed on his person, as his horse was not able to carry them.
At Mud Springs he sold the horse for $500.
Then unincumbered, he returned to Placerville, and he and
the man named Durgae took a contract for putting down a
slide or shoot to pass lumber down to the ditch to build a flume.
For this they received $500.He came to Sacramento and at last
decided that he wanted to ranch.Accordingly he and a Dutchman
who had come out with him started for the
Debago country, in the neighborhood of the red-woods.
They found the people there very much averse to having any
new-comers there, on account of the trouble they were having with
the squatters claims, and as he was very politely but forcibly
requested by several men to leave, he concluded he had better do
so; so, mounting their horses, he and the
Dutchman came straight back to Sacramento. Not long after that
he bought out a restaurant between J and K streets,
which he ran two or three days, and finding it to be a good
business, bought out another on Front street.Three weeks later
the big fire of 1852 came, and he was the loser by about $1500,
together with the improvements he had laid out on the place.
This left him only $400, $200 of whichhe gave to a man and
commissioned him to go to San Francisco and buy
a stock of cakes, cherry brandy, etc. When the goods arrived
from San Francisco he was unprepared to receive them, and
as part of them were such a nature that they had to be
disposed of immediately, he spread out his cakes on top of his
barrels, and sold out all except his brandy. He was well
satisfied with the results. He then decided to try mining, and
accordingly sent for his Dutchman and went to Sonoma.
They worked two weeks and got nothing.Mr. Hoover had
his own and his friend's expenses to pay; so when his funds were
reduced to $20 they started for Sacramento.Arriving at
Stockton, he had but $5, not enough to bring them both to
Sacramento; so he told his friend to work his way up.When he
arrived in Sacramento he had but 25 cents in his pocket. With
this he bought some pie, then crept into a haystack,
where he spent the night, the first and last night he ever spent
in a like place.Next morning he hunted up 'Bill'
Hamilton, the man who had bought his horses, told him he
was 'dead broke' and wanted a job.Hamilton took him to
the Bee House, gave him his breakfast, and told the landlord to
board him as long as was necessary; then gave him two
horses and told him to go to work for himself, and when he was
able he could repay him.In the course of two weeks he had made
$700, besides paying Mr. Hamilton. This was
during the floods, and the streets of Sacramento were all
afloat. He hitched his team to a boat and took passengers
through the streets. This only lasted two weeks, and then the
streets were once more fit for foot travelers. He then tried
hauling freight, and continued until the railroad was built.
Finally he purchased his present place of 1,200 acres on the
Cosumnes River, where he carried on a successful business, the
ranch being fertile and productive. He was one of the largest
hop-growers in the county; also raised grain and cattle. He
owned another ranch of 1,600 acres on the Sacramento
River, which is devoted to stock-raising.He first commenced
raising hops some eight or nine years ago.The year hops
commanded such a high price he hauled the most valuable
load ever hauled through the streets of Sacramento; it
consisted of 105 bales loaded on four wagons, and drawn by nine
mules and a horse. He took it to Front street and
delivered part of it to Booth & Co., and the rest to Mebins & Co.
It brought $10,000.The home place is one of the
finest in the country. The building is a handsome structure, and
the place is kept in first-class order.Mr. Hoover was married
April 18, 1861, to Margaret Van Zandt, all natives of Mifflin
County, Pennsylvania. She went to Illinois, thence to Missouri
where she was married. She left there for
California April 21, 1861.Mr. and Mrs. Hoover had one son, Ben
Van Zandt Hoover, born November 24, 1863.

The largest and tallest tombstone (about 15 feet high) in the Elk
Grove, CA cemetery is marked HOOVER and there are
4 burial sites (two on each side) within the enclosure with one
stone containing 2 names:

The Arizona Republic, Sunday, October 21, 1990 -
OBITUARIES - Herbert Charles Hoover Sr., 70, of Mesa, a
U.S. Postal Service letter carrier, died Oct. 18, 1990.He was
born in Wisconsin and was a World War II Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine E.; four sons; one
brother; and seven grandchildren.Services: 2 p.m. Monday,
Bunker's Desert View Chapel, 9702 E. Apache Trail, Mesa.
This obituary was contributed by Eileen Christensen and is very
much appreciated. Some people think that it is not
appropriate to send in obituaries from current newspapers as it
is a "recent" happening.Always remember that an obituary in
1840 was a "recent" happening in 1840 but is an invaluable
genealogical find today.

QUERIES

1.My Jacob Hoover was born 6 Oct 1826 in Mercer Co, PA.He
married Cynthia Ann
Ague, on 14 Feb 1849 in Edinborough, PA and he died 14
Apr 1904 in Essex Twp, Clinton
Co, MI.They had 14 children, all surviving to adulthood. The
first ten children were born
in Mahoning Co, OH near Lowellville and the last four
children were born in Clinton Co,
MI.Jacob's father was Jacob Hoover, born 1795 in
Westmoreland Co, PA and died 31 Jul
1868 near Coitsville, Mahoning Co, OH.His wife was
Christine Bush.Jacob Sr's father was Peter Hoover who
married Mary Huber. This is as far as I have gotten.I am still
trying to track down the descendants of Jacob and
Cynthia's children, a long and tough task.If you have any data
that would assist me, I would appreciate your sharing with me.

2.I am tracing my ancestor, Ludwig (or Louis) Huber. He is
believed to have been born on 7 Dec 1826, probably in
Offenburg, Germany. He is believed to be the son of
Franziska Huber of Offenburg and a nephew of Train
superintendent Franz Huber. He married Luise Stigler about 1870.
It is believed that Ludwig came to the US as a young man and that
he served in the Civil War as a First Lieutenant using the name
of Louis Huber. He served with a Captain
Conrad, Second Lieut A. Tabel and First Lieut and
Quartermaster William Gueppe.I do not know which
regiment.Ludwig died on 13 Sep 1883 in Offenburg,
Germany. They had a son, Ernst, born 15 May 1873 in
Offenberg who came to the US.He married Julia Schmid on
16 Jul 1904 in Butte, MT.He died 24 Nov 1918.Also had
a daughter, Bertha Emily, born 4 Jun 1872 in Offenburg.
She married George John Mohr on 7 Oct 1895 in Rathdrum,
Idaho.Bertha died 11 Mar 1952 in Escondido, CA.She is
my great grandmother.Does any of this sound familiar to
anyone?Juliet Ford

The editor's son, Rod, was at Portland, Oregon State
University library the other day and looked to see what he could
find on the Hoover family. Some time back, I asked
him to check for such things in libraries as he travels about the
country. He sent me some more stuff on the Oregon
Donation Land Claim records.I checked them to see if he
found anything new.Unfortunately he did not; however,
during the comparison some information that I already had
jumped out at me from the screen. It is so easy to read
something without it sticking in the brain.I found an entry in
the LDS IGI on a niece of my father.I will be writing Salt Lake
City to see who filed it and what else it has of value.I am
sure it will contain the dates of birth of the children in that
family.Maybe more.

Also the information about Jacob Hoover and his sister,
Mary, who married Samuel Rafferty finally sank in.Such as their
father, Felix Hoover, being born in Pennsylvania and his wife
being Mary Stover.Since their father's will listed his wife as
Sarah, there must have been a second marriage or the wife used
both the name of Mary and Sarah. While this is
possible, I find it highly unlikely.Since I know there were
some Stover people in Pennsylvania, I will have to do more
looking to see if I can find a connection with a Hoover
family. My database was negative. Also, Jacob Wooley being
married to an Eleanor Hoover in Perry Co, OH missed my
brain also.Since Jacob Hoover signed his land claim were they
related or only neighbors?Another little piece of
information that need more investigation. Also, Henry Black
signed the land claim forms for both Jacob Hoover and Jacob
Wooley.Coincidence, neighbors or related?

It seems that at times I have more leads than I can handle; and,
at other times there appears to be no leads at all.Oh well, it
is always interesting to think about such things, even if I never
get around to doing the actual investigation.

An Electronic Bulletin Board friend sent me the following:Green
Co, KY Deed Book 11, entry 92; I Jacob Hoover of
DuBois Co, IN for and in serious consideration of services
rendered myself and monies paid by my son Coonrod Hoover
and for said services and money have sold him all the
property I have in the County of Green of whatsoever
description relinquishing all right to the same.Given under my
hand this 23 day of August 1823.
Wit:John AffmartinJacob Hoover
Peter Holt

I read some microfilm last night and ran across this.Ann
Faulkner on Prodigy.

Now, this is getting close to home for me.I suspect this may
have been near his time of death, as he does not show up on the
census for 1830.I do not have the 1820 Green Co, KY
census, just an index. The index shows a Jacob Hoover in
Green Co, Ky for 1820.1830 census index for DuBois Co,
IN shows a Phelix Hoover (Felix Hoover); a Jacob Hoover in both
Wayne Co and in Washington Co.The Wayne Co area
is more probably the Quaker Hoover branch. The
Washington Co Jacob looks more interesting. The 1830
census for Monroe Co, IN shows a Coonrod Hoover. While
it also lists a Jacob Hoover; this Jacob appears to be to young
to be the father of Coonrod. The Jacob Hoover of Monroe
Co, IN in 1830 is more likely to be the brother of John
Hoover listed on the same page of the census of the same
county and/or an older brother of Coonrod. There is a
second John Hoover who lives near William Followell and
who is the editor's great grandfather.Whether these 2
groups of Hoovers are related, remains for further
investigation.Obviously, more research on this is necessary.

Dear Sir, .....some little delay I comply with your request by
sending a report of hospital prision and etc life which I hope
you will examine....signed Joseph P.J. HooverHOSPITAL
EXPERIENCE - On the retreat south I
were taken sick 6 miles this side of Catanooga and sent there to
the hospital which were a large building I were there a few days
and had splendid treatment as far as I can remember I got in a
delerious condition did not know anything when I
came to my mind I were in another hospital it ws one night there
were an old man sitting beside me I asked him where
I was at he told me to be quiet that I was very sick and for me
not tdo take any he ordered nourishment to be brought
to me I remember it was soup but what kind I cannot say the next
I knew I were in Atlanta in a very large room and
surrounded by sick soldiers nurses and doctors I asked where I
was and was informed that I were in Atlanta Georgia Thare they
had made all preperations necessary to care for the sick The
Docotors and Nurses were of a high type and perfect
gentlemen they treated me with the greatest kindness in fact as
far as I could discern they treated all of the(m) very kind but
alas we had some that would grumble about the fare
others about the nurses while some would curse the doctors for
all they were worth I thought of the old ssaying that if Jesus
Christ were here on Earth he could not please
everybody which is true for he did not when he was here it there
I seen the old man Dr. Eve of Nashville it seemed to me like
seeing some of my own people I also seen several
refugees from our county among them Jajor John Childress
Sr. who lived near Murfreesboro he and my father were great
friends.Soon as he recognised me he asked me if I needed any
money I told him I did not but threw a 10 dollar bill on my bunk
and steped out telling me if I should need money to write to him
at his address and it would be sent to me at
once Oh how I need friends at that time and I ceartainly
appreciated them I finally got so I could sit up then walk about
a little and the Battle of Chickamauga came off and
they send all the sick that could sit up to the convalesance camp
to give room for the wounded I remained there for a
while and still had as good treatment as the Confederacy
could give from there I was sent to the Guard Camps as it
was there you had to get permission and passport back to
your regiment I spent 2 or 3 days there and from there I was sent
to Richmond Virginia to Guard some prisoners that
were captured in Mississippi we had a very interesting trip I had
permession to inspect the L_bd? prison thourgaly there were not
room for any more prisoners there so we caried
them across James River to the prision campts I ______those camps
on that Island wishing in my mind we had every Yanke on Gods
green earth right there on that island where we
would make them sue for peace I went back to the prison to view
it and they jest what our own soldiers had to eat I must
acknowledge they were somewhat crowded but would to god
they had been crowded a million times more it would have
suited me better that way I returned back to Atlanta reported at
the guard camps and got permission to go to my regiment stationed
at Missionary Ridge camped a short while we were sent on top of
Lookout Mountain at Summertown at it was
called them about this time rations were scarce and we had to do
guard duty about n9 miles down Nickajack Trail in the day and
report back to camps at night sometimes we would
be very hungry indeed it was then that the army began to
dwindle by desertions on the 24 of November were ordered
down from the mountain to foot of Missionary Ridge where
we slept with our guns in readiness for any
emergency.....morning of 25th we commenced our march to
top of Ridge under cannonade fire....Alf Davis was hit by pice of
shell...2 of company were killed.....5 or 6
wounded.....among the wounded was Isaac Eaton a little
fellow and ....were retreating the Lt. missed Eaton....sent Jack
Woods and I back to bring him up.....found him....he was
wounded in the thigh....helping him along.....near the
place....the blamed Yankeys got possesion of the ditches and they
taken the three of us prisoners....kept us on ridge all
night....they collected the dead spread their oil cloths over
their faces but the poor Confederates who were killed had
nothing to spread over them the sun was shining brightly in their
faces....I felt so sorry for them....but congratulated myself
knowing they got about from 5 to 10 more of them
than they got of us.....the 26th marched us down off the ridge to
the old car shed or depot at Chatanooga....confined there in that
mud or Hog hole 2 or 3 days....ordered out in line to hike to
Bridgeport....they had a pontoon across Tennessee
river....broke in the middle several prisoners were
drowned...some guards also....one man got out of the
river...said his name was William Hume(?)....of
Nashville....would like to have a chat with him....we were put in
an old box car...shiped like hogs to Rock Island prison no
incidents of not until we arrived at Nashville where were
placed in Zolicoffer house....one poor fellow looked window and
his brains was shot out he fell dead....had change there to take
the oath...some accepted....Old Any Johnson was
military Governor at that time....loaded again in freight
cars....treated all right by citizens until we crossed Ohio
river....then the finer of scorn and tantaliing began....guards
payed no attention....seemed to enjoy it....arrived Rock Island
prison 11th Dec. 1863 sich and worn out....sent to hospital next
morning....treated very well....I were appointed nurse for a
while....taken the small pocks....sent out to the pest hospital
stayed about a month with somewhere about one million or
more cooties chasing each other up and down my spine and
now and then stop to dig into the small pock sores it was
awful....got back to prision pen and to my barrack No. 29
near the middle of the prision....that was Apr. or May....I could
get letters from home once a week....gave me a heap of
comfort...had plenty to eat at that time coffee load bread hominy
molasses potatoes rice vinegar pickle beef or pork or mule
sometimes bacon and sugar...order came to cut some of the
rations....was done...gave a call for volenteers for the namy
about 400 went out at once they cut the rations off
then to 8 oz. of bread about 2 oz. of green beef that you
could throw 25 feet against a wall and it would stick.no coffee
no potatoes no hominy....nothing....only the bread and beef or
mules...I got a pice of mule neck in my mouth and
the hair in the meat scratched the roof of my mouth like it was
briars I have known men to give their meat rations for a bone
when they would beat it up put it in a cup with water and boil
and boil when cold skim off the greast and enjoy it.I hve seen
priosers get an old bone and suck it jest like have seen children
such a candy stick....when they had starved us this way for a
while they gave a call for volunteers to go the
frontiers....giving them 100 dollars bounty 15 dollars per month
feed and clothe them royally and for them never to
have to fight the south....the result over 1700 went out first
call....2 or 3 weeks after this they gave another chance to join
them....75 went....more calls....then no more calls....no more
food were allowed....guess they thought what remained were pretty
true Rebbels...if the light in a stove flared up anytime of night
Bang went a gun....2 or three killed that way....if a soldier had
to punished they had the means right at hand for they had 2 post
about 6 feet from each other sunk in ground a 2 inch plank nailed
to them with edge up....(made to shape a horses head and tail)
called Mulligins Filly....if prisoner had to ride and seemed
sorta cowed he got off pretty easy but if he showed the least
like it was fun they would tie a 6 lb. rock to each boot ...bring
tears to his eyes and curses to his
lipe...another mode were to tie them up by the shumbs a
spike driven into a post a stout string secured prisioner made to
stand on a plank....hands high as he could reach...string
fastened to his thumps....blood run from the poor elbows to the
ground....I get made everytime I think of these
things....there were 12000 prisoners arrived at Rock Island, 400
joined the navie, 1763 joined the frontier, 4427 died, 45 killed
or missing, 75 at another time joined the frontiers (6810 total
left 5190. we had 5190 starved prisoners to come home and
struggle for a living but we had the nerve....while in prison we
eat dogs rats mice and anything but a clue coat I was released
from prison 24th March 1865....a prisoner for 16 months lacking
one day....arrived home 7th April
1865....found my poor old Father in prision at Murfreesboro held
as hostage for some carpet baggers the confederates had taken off
he was released 17th April 1865 never did take the Oath.....

Refer to my query in Volume 7, Issue 4.I regret that I
inadvertently misinformed you that Henry Hover obtained
land in what is presently Pike County, PA.Originally part of
Bucks County, Pike County was finally incorporated in 1814 after
having been at times a part of Wayne and Northampton counties.
Manuel, Manuel Jr., and Ludwig Hover obtained
land in what is presently Pike Counties, verified by further
research, but I fail to verify by deeds and land warrants that
Henry resided on the Pennsylvania side of Sussex County.
However, there are numerous land warrants listed in
Northampton County for Henry Hover (or different Henry
Hovers).Marie J. Summa

success and to swell the attendance to one hundred and
eleven.

Several communications were read from members of the
family, unable to be present. All were pleased and happy
that "Uncle Mike" was again able to be present, with marked
improvement in health. The usual elaborate dinner was
served, to which ample justice was done, after which the
annual business meeting was held. The 5th Annual Reunion
will be held June 15, at Lisbon, in the Reformed Church.

BUSINESS MEETING

Reunion was called to order by President John H. Hoover of
Lisbon. The Secretary and Treasurer reports were read and
approved. It was moved and seconded to hold the next
Reunion in Lisbon, the executive committee to set the day.The
following officers were elected for the coming year:

Honorary President, "Uncle Mike" Hoover, Tama
President, John H. Hoover, Lisbon
Vice-President, Ben Neal, Mount Vernon
Secretary and Treasurer, Mrs. Burt H. Neal, Mount Vernon
Executive Committee, Officers and Clyde Hoover, Eva Floyd, Mrs.
Hugh Yeisley, Burt Neal and Freeman Hoover.

PROGRAM

Following the business meeting, some of the attendants from the
east, were called upon for remarks, who expressed their pleasure
in being able to be present, and forming
acquaintances with so many relatives, they had never seen
before.Others also spoke briefly.An exceptionally
interesting part of the program was a paper read by Mrs.
Henry Neidig, detailing many facts of interest regarding the
early history of the Hoover family. The name was originally
"Huber", and John Ulrich Huber is the first member
mentioned by any historian, as having come to America.A
number of Hubers were named, and interesting facts with
reference to them noted, in this excellent paper, "all being
undoubtedly of the same family, as they came from the same
general locality in Europe, and settled near one another in
Pennsylvania."The paper read by Mrs. Neidig can only be
thus briefly referred to, but a complete history of the family
may be read in a book that is being written by her husband,
covering the history and inter-relations of the Hoover, Neidig
and Hershey families, which will be of interest to a
considerable number of people.

The business session over, the remainder of the afternoon
was spent in a social way, and the fourth annual reunion was
declared a success, and the occasion of great enjoyment on the
part of all.Particular gratification was had in the
presence of the members of the family from the east and may
another year find them present again, with others also, and a
larger attendance than at any time before.

Marcella Webster Hoover writes "this summer when I was in
Pennsylvania, I met two new cousins. One of them, Carl
Hoover, went to a Hoover reunion in Iowa in 1927, and he
brought or was sent the enclosed program. The other cousin was
Freeman Hoover.I believe that he is my husband's
great-great uncle. Also we are related to the Bert Hoovers of
Highspire, PA.

I would appreciate it if you would publish this program and would
love to hear from anyone who might have been there
or who had relatives there."(EDITOR:Above is the
program as requested. It is always nice to receive such items.
Not only do I, personally, enjoy reading them, but they
usually contain much information that can be used by
researchers.)

PERSONAL RESEARCH

A little digging around in my notes and checking with the local
Family Center reveals that the marriage records for DuBois
County, IN were burned in August 1839 and no marriage records
prior to that date are available.I haven't checked to see if
there are any records available from a newspaper which listed
vital statistics.

I thought that I had printed this before but I could not find it,
so here it is. [again?] Alexander Baker married Leady Hoover on 1
Apr 1819 in Crawford Co, IL.This is the grandparents of the
editor's grandmother Lydia Ellen Molen Hoover and the same
Alexander Baker who signed the will of Felix Hoover in 1835 in
Macoupin Co, IL.They were listed in the 1850 Macoupin Co, IL
census.

For anyone doing research on the Oregon Territory, The Oregon
Trail Revisited by Gregory Franzwa, 1972, is recommended as a
good guide to the trail, though it is more historical than
genealogical. The Oregon Trail, Yesterday and Today by William
E. Hill, 1986 is another book for giving you the 'feel' of the
trail with some quotes from diaries, maps and pictures.

When the 1790 Census was taken, did you know that
1) Maine was part of Massachusetts?
2) Kentucky was part of Virginia?
3) Alabama and Mississippi were part of Georgia?
4) Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and part of Minnesota were known as
Northwest Territory?
5) Western New York was wilderness with Elmira and Binghampton
detached hamlets?
6) Detroit and Vincennes were so small and isolated that they
were not included in the report of the First Census?

Probably all of you are aware of these things but just in case
you were not, I thought I would send them along as a little
something extra!

War.I believe Gerhard was not married when he came. This is
NOT President Hoover's line. On another line:Susan/Suysannah
Kealear (many spellings), daughter of Peter & Elizabeth Kealear
married a Hoover.Which one?Named a son, Anthony Kealear
Hoover, evidently after her brother.I think this Hoover family
may have been in Clarion Co, PA. Also need data on John Huber,
born?died? married?had a son David Hoover who married Mary
Snyder.Who were here parents?Their son, David Hoover lived
near Warrior's Mark, Huntingdon Co, PA.Miss Sara Clawson

4.I am researching my family history. My Hoover family is from
Center Co, PA.My 2dGreat Grandfather was Harvey Hoover (26
Jan 1833-1918).He married Mary Catlow (1835- 1911).Harvey's
father was George Hoover (1801-1870) who married Esther (Hester)
Peters (20 Oct 1809-26 Mar 1899).Her father was Casper Peters.
Most of this information was obtained from a letter to my
grandmother's sister from a Wendell Miller back in 1973.I have
unable to locate this Wendell 'Win' Miller, which is unfortunate,
since his family had prepared a 50 page booklet on the Peters
family.Any information would be most helpful.Gordon L. Allen

5.Do you know of Hannah Hoover?Born Dec 30, 1816 in Ohio or
Indiana.She died May 8, 1872 in Indiana.She married Frederick
Goings on August 25, 1836 at Delaware Co., Indiana.Children
were James A., William R., Rachel E., John M., Mary Ann, Sarah
Jane, Susan C., Elam H., and Hannah M.Need parents and/or
siblings.Any information would be of value.I have checked the
book on President Herbert Hoover's family and there is a
possibility that one of the persons listed is my Hannah.Andrew
Hoover (Andreas Huber) 1723-1794 m. Margaret Pfautz. One of
their children was named Jacob (1754-1821 who married Elizabeth
???.One of their children was named Jacob (1777-1856 who
married Catherine Yount in 1801.They had a child named Hannah
Catherine 1821-1876.If any of you are of this line, could you
shed some light on this Hannah Hoover. Verna Jennings Sullivan
[Editor's Note:Verna said that she had written to two of our
readers back in November 1990 but has never received a reply.I
hope she sent a stamped return envelope for a reply. However, I
would hope that anyone of our group who receives some
correspondence about a Hoover family member would answer all
correspondence.]

IMPORTANT NOTICE

On the mailing label of this issue, I have added a line showing
when your subscription expires. While this will help you keep
track of when your renewal is due, it also is of importance to
the Editor.I hope that this will assist me in keeping the
subscription roster accurate and current. Some labels will have
Expires:11/11/11 and this is deliberate.Since some of the
issues are complimentary, I needed some kind of note to show that
there is no expiration date of those. When I tried to put a date
of 00/00/00 into my database program, it told me that was an
incorrect date and nothing I could do would cause the computer
program to accept it.Finally, I decided upon the above date for
the complimentary issues to libraries & others. If you find an
error in your label, please notify the Editor.

JUST AN EXTRA NOTE

The Kentucky Historical Society wants to record the migration of
18th & 19th century Kentuckians who "went thataway".Native born
or "just tarried a while".They would like name of Ancestor or
Ancestor family; place and date of birth; primary places of
residence in Kentucky and date of emigration from state; places
and dates of residence thereafter; any claim to fame; and place
and date of death.Write to Kentucky Historical Society, PO Box
H, Frankfort, KY 40602-2108.This is for their bicentennial in
1992, so better hurry!
