Game Mechanics - Make Fishing Rods placeable instead of having to be held (2024)

I think this would be a pretty small change with a huge benefit to the fishing mechanics. The mechanic would work as follows.

1. Start by crafting multiple fishing rods.
2. Casting a rod would apply a piece of bait to it, removing the bait from the inventory and applying it to the rod.
3. Right clicking on the ground//platform would place the rod as en entity on the map, with the line cast out.
4. Left clicking a placed rod with an empty hand would pick up the rod and reel the line in.

Pros
- more interactive
- faster paced
- less boring
- it would disincentive people from using the infinite rod glitch, as there would be no real need.
- It would give a use for multiple fishing rods and provide an incentive to keep old ones until you're able to upgrade them all to a given tier.

other notes
this is how a lot of fishermen actually go fishing anyway.
It would improve the effectiveness of fishing/crate/sonar potions while remaining balanced.
you would have an increased chance to miss catches if you put out too many rods, creating a natural limitation to its effectiveness.

You did hyperbolize the impact of this suggestion a bit, but I agree it would make fishing less boring for some people, as you could, say, farm rods of discord while getting chaos fish.

The infinite rod glitch is actually getting patched out, because they're nerfing autopause to only work in the settings menu next update.

"Faster paced" and "less boring" sound like cons to me.

I enjoy Terraria fishing because of how simple and easy it is. It's something I do in multiplayer while hanging out with friends and chatting.

Trying to turn it into a weird minigame like this to counterbalance a glitch is a little excessive.

I agree, but if you read it carefully none of the changes actually make it faster paced or less boring, just easier to mass fish.

You're forgetting you still actually have to craft the rods, which means you're grinding just as much as before.

With multpile rods out it would objectively have to be faster paced. You would need to react to multiple hits in quicker succession than if you only had one rod.

In guess, it indirectly makes it faster paced then.

I think it's a best of both worlds type of situation. If you like the current fishing mechanic, you could continue to use it. But if someone wanted to go for specific catches I would argue that this is a funner mechanic. I think it would arguably be more fun as you and a buddy could double team 10 rods while chatting. The terraria devs are the ones who " made fishing into a weird minigame". I'm making a suggestion that I think will benefit the minigame. If you have a problem with fishing, then I'd say don't do it. It's an entirely optional mechanic anyway.

Gotcha!

How is it faster paced if you need to put down and pick up the fishing rod every time a fish (or something else) nibbles on your line? Even if you have multiple rods out, you can't haul them in every time they all nibble. Heck, that feels like a whack-a-mole horror scenario to me.
I also don't think adding more annoying steps in fishing would make it less boring. On the contrary.
I agree that fishing is boring, but with a high fishing skill it is at least fast. The amount of stuff my high-skill characters fish up per minute is ridiculous. Your method would slow fishing down to a crawl.

The sole reason why this would be a nice idea is to have builders create a nice fishing spot due to the fishing rod being placeable, but other than that...

think about it with a sonar potion. You can actively see what's biting the lines and determine if you want to haul in a bass or wait for something more worthwhile. crate, or biome fish, etc. I somewhat agree that it'd be like a whack-a-mole game, instead of a whack one mole game. To your point about high fishing skill. That's not something you get till mid-ish game. This would make early game fishing a little more productive and late game fishing w/ crate/sonar/fishing potions much more productive. If for instance, you wanted to catch ebonkoi, or armored cave fish. You could set up multiple rods and only reel those fish in exclusively. I'm genuinely not tracking how this would slow fishing down. Help me out?

I'm picturing a lot of running around to various standing fishing rods, get to the nibbles in time, quickly pick up the rod, reel it in, place it on the ground, run to another fishing rod that seemed to have caught something, pick it up, reel it in, place it down...

In that case, maybe you could just right click the rod to reel it in, then right click with bait in your hand to place it back into the rod?
