“Freaky Friday 2” Is Officially Filming—Here’s Everything We Know (2024)

We don’t wanna grow up, and thankfully, Disney is taking us back to the early ’00s and one of the most nostalgic movies from that time: 2003’s Freaky Friday. Rumors of a sequel swirled for years after stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan both expressed interest in reprising their roles as mother and daughter Tess and Anna Coleman, who wake up one Friday morning to discover they’ve switched bodies. Now, it’s been confirmed that a follow-up is indeed in the works, and both lead actors, as well as a few of their costars, will return for it. Keep reading to find out everything we know about Freaky Friday 2.

Freaky Friday 2 will arrive sometime in 2025.

Although no official release date has been announced yet, Disney revealed that fans can expect the movie in 2025. (And if we had to guess, we’d bet the movie will drop sometime in the summer, as the first film was released in the United States on August 6, 2003.)

While some Disney sequels have gotten the straight-to-streaming treatment (like Hocus Pocus 2), the media company said the Freaky Friday sequel will come out in theaters.

All this was teased in an Instagram post that went up on June 24, featuring Curtis and Lohan on the set of the sequel, sitting in front of each other’s trailers. “The Colemans are back and coming to theaters in 2025!” the caption read. “The sequel to Freaky Friday is now in production!”

Most of the cast will reprise their roles (joined by a few new faces).

In addition to Lohan and Curtis, many cast members from the original film will reprise their roles in the Freaky Friday sequel, including Mark Harmon as Ryan, Chad Michael Murray as Jake, Stephen Tobolowsky as Elton Bates, Christina Vidal as Maddie, Haley Hudson as Peg, Rosalind Chao as Pei-Pei, and Lucille Soong as Pei-Pei’s mother.

And a few new stars have been added to the sequel’s cast, including Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, best known as the star of Netflix sitcom Never Have I Ever (another title that explores the complicated relationships between mothers and their teenage daughters) and Sophia Hammons, who made her feature debut in the Netflix docudrama The Social Dilemma. Julia Butters (The Fabelmans) and Manny Jacinto (The Good Place) will also appear.

Nisha Ganatra is directing.

Nisha Ganatra has been confirmed as the director of Freaky Friday 2; it will be her first feature-film directing credit since 2020’s The High Note. Other films Ganatra has helmed include Late Night, The Hunters, Chutney Popcorn, and Cosmopolitan.

On the TV side, she has directed episodes of a number of critically acclaimed comedy series, including Girls, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Shameless, and The Mindy Project. For her work on the Amazon dramedy Transparent, she received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Jordan Weiss (Dollface) will be writing the screenplay. (The first Freaky Friday was directed by Mark Waters, and the screenplay was written by Heather Hach and Leslie Dixon, adapted from the 1972 children’s novel of the same name by Mary Rodgers.)

The plot may include a double body-swap.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Ganatra put out a casting call in spring 2024 looking to fill the role of Anna’s daughter Harper in the new film. In the casting call, Harper was described as “a tomboy with a sharp sense of humor [who’s] in a bit of a mood these days because her longtime single mom is set to marry British restaurateur Eric Davis.” The description also noted that Eric has his own teenage daughter, Lily, who does not totally see “eye to eye” with Harper.

EW saw pages from the script that—although they were not confirmed to be final—appeared to describe scenes in which Tess and Anna switch bodies with the two teenage girls. Assuming Tess and Anna also switch bodies with each other again, we might have a double body-swap to look forward to when Freaky Friday 2 hits theaters next year.
