Easy Guacamole Recipe (1)

Today I bring you Joe Montana’s Touchdown Guacamole. I have loved football forever, but I was really addicted to it back when Joe Montana was playing with the 49ers. Those were great years of football!! My friend Karen and I would watch all the games but especially her team, the Miami Dolphins, and mine, the San Fransisco 49ers. We had a friendly rivalry going on at that time.

Watching football and munching away on food kind of go hand in hand. Ken had found this recipe a few years ago, and even though he doesn’t like guacamole, he loves this one. Chunky and full of flavor. Thanks to Ken for finding it and to Joe Montana for all those great years of football and for this fabulous guacamole. Love it!!

What is Traditional Guacamole Made of?

Easy Guacamole Recipe (3)

We have added a few more ingredients than traditional guacamole with Joe Montana’s Touchdown Guacamole. Is guacamole just mashed avocado? The answer is no, traditionally though all you need isavocados, onion, tomatoes, cilantro, jalapeno pepper, lime juice, garlic, and salt.

Below you will see what is in our guacamole, and it is so perfect for your gameday feast.

What is in Easy Guacamole?

Easy Guacamole Recipe (4)

Simple ingredients go into this simple guacamole. This is not an authentic guacamole, as we have added other guacamole ingredients. We like to leave it chunky also, so it is not a guacamole dip either. It is a fabulous chunky, delightful guacamole to enjoy anytime.

Ingredients

Ripe avocados, seeded, peeled, and diced – If you can’t find ripe avocados see our pro tips below to ripen them quickly.
Ripe red tomatoes, diced – You can use any kind of tomato you like for this. Romas work well as they aren’t too juicy, but whatever you have on hand will work.
Jalapeno peppers, seeded and finely diced – Use gloves when working with jalapenos so that you don’t have any chance of rubbing their oils into your eyes.
Black beans drained and rinsed – These black beans add not only color and texture but flavor to this wonderful chunky dip.
Green onions, thinly sliced – A great substitute for the green onion is red onion, but if you don’t like that biting edge that red onion has, you can use a sweet onion or stick with the green onions.
Limes, juiced – I like fresh lime juice way more than lemon juice in guacamole.
Sharp-aged cheddar cheese, grated – Make sure your cheddar is aged, or it will get lost with all the other flavors that are going on in this guacamole.
Garlic salt – This adds lots of flavor to the guacamole but don’t go heavy on the salt.

How to Make Easy Guacamole

Making guacamole is simple, fast, and easy. You just need a cutting board, grater, knife, and a big bowl. In no time, you will be digging in. No need to let the guacamole sit.

Recipe Pro Tips!

Easy Guacamole Recipe (9)

Here are some great tips to make the best guacamole!

  • Plan ahead for making guacamole; if you can only find unripe avocados, then you will want to ripen them if you need them quickly.
  • One hack is to add it with a ripe banana or other fruit like an apple into a paper bag, and it will ripen faster than by itself, usually in a day, if the avocado isn’t too hard.
  • Alternatively, wrap an avocado, or as many as you need, individually in foil and bake in a 200F oven for 10 minutes or longer, depending again on how ripe your avocado is. Remove from the oven and let cool in the foil.
  • Want to amp up the flavor of your guacamole? Add crushed red pepper, cayenne, paprika, or even garlic powder or granulated garlic can give your guacamole a completely different profile of flavors.
  • Leave the guacamole chunky if you are just eating it by itself.
  • Add a spoon for serving so you are not breaking chips into the dip.
  • What ingredient keeps guacamole from turning brown? The lime in this recipe keeps the guacamole a pretty green color.

FAQs

Is guacamole just mashed avocado? ›

What Is Guacamole? Guacamole is an avocado-based dip or spread that originated in Mexico. It's typically made with mashed avocado and lime juice, then seasoned with salt and cilantro. Guacamole often contains tomatoes and onions.

What is real guacamole made of? ›

Here's all you need for traditional guacamole: ripe avocados, coriander/cilantro, red onions, jalapeño or Serrano chilli, lime and salt. Avoid unnecessary fillers such as sour cream and cream cheese. They only dilute flavour. Popular optional extras include: garlic, tomato, cumin powder.

How do Mexican restaurants keep guacamole from turning brown? ›

Pour a thin but visible layer of water or lemon/lime juice over the guacamole to form a barrier with the air. Cover the dish with plastic wrap, pushing the wrap, so it is flush with the guacamole to prevent air pockets, or put the guacamole in a sealed tub.

Is eating guacamole as healthy as eating avocado? ›

Guacamole serves up an array of health benefits, and most are due to the avocado itself: specifically its monounsaturated fats. “These are healthy fats that play an important role in the structure and function of our brain and other cell membranes throughout the body,” says Badger.

Is Taco Bell guacamole real avocado? ›

Add the fact that our guacamole is made with real Haas avocados and you've got a taste-bud symphony going on here.

Why is restaurant guacamole so green? ›

We've heard rumors that keeping the avocado pit in the bowl of guac was one of the best methods. The pit protects part of the guacamole's surface from oxygen exposure, which prevents that enzymatic reaction. But it's also often considered a magic wand that somehow does even more to slow or stop guac from turning brown.

Should you put tomatoes in guacamole? ›

Don't worry though, white onion will also work. Add tomatoes to your guac. In my opinion, all guacamole should include tomato for texture and flavor. Regular tomatoes tend to be too watery, so go for grape tomatoes instead!

What is the best onion for guacamole? ›

Most people prefer to use sweet white onion in their guacamole recipe. Red or yellow onion tends to give the guacamole too strong of a garlic flavor.

Why should you leave the lime out of guacamole? ›

You see, lime is a very strong acidic flavor and it can easily overpower the delicate flavor of the avocado. Instead, finely dice red onions and pickle them with lime juice for 15-30 minutes.

How to tell if guacamole is bad? ›

Once opened, store-bought guacamole usually lasts 1-2 days. Homemade guacamole also usually lasts 1-2 days. You'll know it's gone bad when it has a substantial puddle of brown liquid and the layers below the surface have lost their vibrant green hue. That's when it's time to throw it out.

How does Chipotle keep their guacamole so green? ›

When should you not eat guacamole? ›

Although brown guacamole isn't the most appealing, it's completely safe to eat (as long as you've stored the guacamole in the refrigerator, and it isn't more than three days old). "While a bit off-putting to look at, brown guacamole is totally safe," confirms Food Network's nutritionist, Dana Angelo White, MS RD ATC.

How to doctor up guacamole? ›

Often an additional pop of citrus is all guac needs to come alive and taste better. If you still aren't happy with the taste, you can rely on mix-ins to jazz it up. Try adding cilantro, salsa, a diced jalapeno or serrano pepper, feta cheese, or a few dashes of hot sauce.

Is it better to make guacamole the night before? ›

When you use roughly 1 tablespoon of lime juice per avocado, the acidity will prevent the avocados from turning brown overnight in the fridge. I always make this recipe the night before with no browning. Use a tall (not wide) storage container.
