To translate Garam means Warm/ Hot & Masala means Spice Blend. The word Garam Masala translates to Warm Spice Blend where the combination of warming spicesbelieved to elevate body temperature. The spice mix not only uplifts the body temperature, they also uplift the mood on the day.

Garam masala are believed to have many healthy benefits. Aiding weight loss, reduce bloating, improves immunity and detoxing the body are some them

Every Household in India have their own authentic version of homemade Garam Masala powder. This can vary from region to region around the country. It also depends on the type of recipes you would like to use in.

Punjabi Garam Masala and Garam Masala are quite different too. Later is quite a general spice blend and it has a combination of fewer spices. Why visit the Grocery store, when you can make this instant blend of Spices in 2 minutes.

What is GARAM MASALA?

Garam masala is an Indian spice blend with whole spices, widely used in Indian Cuisine.

First, the Whole Spices are dry roasted in a pan. It is then allowed to cool down and ground to powder in spice blender.

There are days, when we want to reach out for something really quick. So this spice blend with readily available spice powders come handy for the instant fix.

I would recommend not to make this spice mix in large proportion. So, make it in small batches and store it up to a month in clean airtight container.

Make small batches to enjoy flavourful garam masala all the time. It literally takes two minutes, so make them often and enjoy aromatic, fragrant easy garam masala at home.

What is the difference between GARAM MASALA and CURRY POWDER?

Both Curry Powder and Garam masala render exceptional flavour, when added to your curries, stews and soups. However there is a huge difference in both the spice powder mixture.

Curry Powder is turmeric based and is often used during the cooking process.

Garam masala powder is usually added as finishing spice. It is used towards the end of cooking process.

I prefer not to substitute Garam masala for Curry powder or vice versa in Indian dishes.

What Ingredients goes in making Garam Marsala recipe?

Most common spices that are used in the making of Garam Masala are Coriander, Cumin, Cinnamon, Cardamom, Black Cardamom, Pepper, Clove and Nutmeg.

For Spice Variation to the basic Garam Masala mix, add some bay leaf , mace, fennel seeds or chilli. Simply powder them to a fine powder in a coffee grinder or spice grinder and add it to this mixture.

Cinnamon Powder

Cardamom Powder

Black Pepper Powder

Clove Powder

Nutmeg Powder

Don’t like Clove or Nutmeg in your recipe leave it out. This garam marsala recipe can be easily customised.

Every recipe requires a different quantity of the masala powder to be added. Taste and add more if needed.
