Easy Instapot Recipes

The Instant Pot is a kitchen game changer! It can cook just about anything out there from soups to stews to roasts, but it can also handle delicate foods like rice and yogurt as well. We use ours weekly for our meal prep but also throughout the week to heat up pre-cooked foods or prepare the side dishes for our dinners.

Oh, and as if that's not enough, the Instant Pot can even cook your foods from frozen! So even on those nights when you forgot to take something out you can still serve your family a homecooked meal!

If you are unfamiliar with your Instant Pot, don't worry. It's a pretty easy kitchen tool to use. The Instant Pot is a modern-day pressure cooker that has been updated and is so much more user friendly than the versions used in the past. These updates have brought pressure cooking back into kitchens even for those unfamiliar with the cooking method.

And one more thing, a technicality if you will. Instant Pot is the brand name and company responsible for the surge in popularity of this fabulous kitchen gadget. However, you will see an Instant Pot also called a pressure cooker, an Instant Pot or instapot, or even simply IP. All of these terms mean the same thing.

What are the basic directions for cooking with an Instant Pot?

  1. Sauté (if necessary): If the recipe requires sautéing ingredients, use the Sauté function. Make sure to deglaze the bottom of the pot to avoid getting a “burn” notice.
  2. Add Ingredients and Liquids: Add the rest of the ingredients into the pot, ensuring there is enough liquid (usually at least 1 cup) for pressure cooking.
  3. Seal the Instant Pot: Close the lid and make sure the valve is set to "Sealing."
  4. Set Cook Time and Pressure Level: Select the appropriate cooking program or use the “Manual” or “Pressure Cook” setting, then adjust the time and pressure level as needed.
  5. Release Pressure: After the cooking time is complete, the Instant Pot will beep. Allow it to release pressure naturally (which can take 10-25 minutes) or use the quick release by carefully turning the valve to "Venting."
  6. Open and Serve: Once the pressure is fully released and the floating valve drops, open the lid and serve your dish.

Top Instant Pot Recipe Tips

  • Before you purchase your Instant Pot be sure the size is right. You can only fill the inside of your pot ⅔ of the way.
  • Always, and I do mean ALWAYS, be sure to include at least 1 cup of liquid when using your instant pot. Otherwise, it will never come to pressure. (You need steam to create pressure)
  • Cook time refers to the time your Instant Pot is pressure cooking. Depending on what is in your pressure cooker it can take up to 10 minutes for your pot to come up to pressure.
  • Speaking of coming up to pressure, be sure your inner ring and pressure valve are both on properly or the instapot will not pressurize.
  • NR means natural release and occurs when your instant pot has finished cooking and begins slowly releasing the pressure. QR means quick release and occurs when you hit the button and let the pressure out rapidly.
  • You can cook pretty much anything in your Instant Pot. Seriously.
  • Sauteing roasts prior to cooking is easy to do with the built-in saute feature.
  • Depending on your model, some pots will call the manual mode Pressure Cook and others will call this Manual.

FAQs

Why is my Instant Pot pulled pork still tough? ›

Don't Do a Quick Release.

The slow release will keep the meat tender. An immediate release can be why your Instant Pot pulled pork is tough.

Which Instant Pot for beginners? ›

Beginner-Friendly: Instant Pot Duo Nova 7-in-1

The Duo Nova is best for: anyone who's extra cautious about cooking with pressure (or kitchen safety in general).

What do you cook for the first time in an Instant Pot? ›

Try making staples like eggs, sweet potatoes, rice, or lentils using just the pressure cooker function. Then move on to a recipe that uses both the sauté and pressure cooker functions, like Kalua pork, or spaghetti with meat sauce (hands down my favorite Instant Pot recipe).

What does the 7 in 1 Instant Pot do? ›

The Instant Pot Duo is proud to proclaim it's a “7-in-1” appliance, featuring the following functions: Pressure Cooker, Slow Cooker, Rice Cooker, Steamer, Sauté, Yogurt Maker, and Warmer. The device has its temperature and pressure sensors dialed in, resulting in precise results when cooking.

Is pulled pork better in Instant Pot or slow cooker? ›

Slow cooking the meat means it never has the chance to toughen up and will be extra silky and tender. Pressure cooking is faster, though you may lose a little bit of the tenderness. If you're going for the pressure cook method, be sure to get a pork shoulder or pork butt, as opposed to a pork loin.

Does cooking pork longer make it more tender? ›

Pork shoulder might start out as a fatty, tough cut of meat, but cook it low and slow for a few hours and it will be transformed into tender, juicy shreds that fall apart with the touch of your fork.

What is the 5 5 5 method for Instant Pot? ›

The 5-5-5 method involves the following: 5-minute cook time. 5-minute natural pressure release. 5-minute ice bath.

Is Instant Pot better than crock pot? ›

If you are interested primarily in slow cooking, you should buy a dedicated slow cooker. They're more reliable with a range of slow-cooker recipes than an Instant Pot. We found Instant Pot multicookers specifically could not successfully slow-cook dense, high-volume recipes such as beef stew or pot roast.

How long do instant pots last? ›

If you're using your pressure cooker on a daily basis and investing in regular maintenance, it may last you up to five years. On average, though, most pressure cookers perform well for up to three years. After that, it's time to consider investing in a replacement.

What liquid to add to Instant Pot? ›

First, you must add liquid to the Instant Pot before cooking. Without sufficient liquid, pressure won't build — and you'll likely get the dreaded “burn” error. Unless otherwise specified in the recipe, you'll need just enough liquid (usually water or broth) to bring the cooker to pressure.

Why does my Instant Pot smell weird? ›

If you've soaked and scrubbed your Instant Pot and still smell last week's curry chicken, one part is to blame: the silicone sealing ring. Because it's made from silicone (which is prone to absorbing odors) and is the end-point for a lot of concentrated, super-hot steam, it can get pretty stinky.

Can I overcook in the Instant Pot? ›

Unfortunately, once you overcook a piece of meat in the pressure cooker, there's no going back. You'll be left with a pile of dry, crunchy, tasteless fibers and no amount of additional pressure cooking is going to put that moisture back into the meat.

Is the Instant Pot being discontinued? ›

Instant Brands, the company that makes the Instant Pot (as well as Pyrex, Corelle, and a few other product lines), announced that it was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2023. But that doesn't mean the company is going under, and for now it hasn't affected the availability of the Instant Pot.

What is the disadvantage of Instant Pot? ›

An Instant Pot is not going to plan your meals and make everything in 9 minutes start to finish. It's really easy to over-steam your veggies and it's not any faster on THAT task. But. There are many advantages to pressure cooking that can't be beat.

Are Instant Pots worth it? ›

Is it worth buying an Instant Pot? Yes, we do think an Instant Pot is worth it, particularly for pressure cooking. There's a reason it's one of the most popular kitchen appliances out there.

Why is my Instant Pot pork not tender? ›

If you find that your instapot pulled pork is tough after cooking, it's likely because you did a quick pressure release instead of a natural pressure release. Make sure you do a natural pressure release for 2 minutes before opening the vent.

How do you fix tough meat in an Instant Pot? ›

If it's still tough, you will need to cook it longer. The pressure cooking process breaks down tough meat, making it tender. Put the lid back on, seal the pressure cooker, and cook at high pressure for another 10 to 20 minutes.

Why is my pork roast tough in Instant Pot? ›

What Happens If You Overcook Pork in an Instant Pot? Overcooked pork can turn into a dry and tough mess. Once the meat is cooked beyond its optimal temperature, it loses most of its natural moisture and becomes dry and tasteless. The texture of the meat changes, and it becomes stringy and tough.

Does pulled pork get more tender the longer you cook it? ›

The low-and-slow method is the cornerstone of excellent pulled pork. This technique involves cooking the pork at a low temperature (typically between 225°F to 250°F) for several hours. This slow cooking process breaks down the tough muscle fibers and connective tissue, resulting in tender, fall-apart meat.
